There is an ongoing debate amongst the masses on the topic of bottled water vs tap water. What side are you on? Why?
On one side of the equation you have the tap water purists. They debate that tap water is not only cheaper but also just as clean as bottled water. Not only that, you receive fluoride in tap water that you don’t get in bottled water. This strengthens teeth.
On the other side of the equation, you have the bottled water enthusiasts. Not only are bottles of water easier to carry, but they also include water that you “know” is safe. Why take a chance of coming down with some disease that comes from your faucet when you can have purified water from a bottle?

Drinking bottled water from companies such as Aquafina, Evian, Naya, and Volvic simply taste good and make you feel good. If this isn’t worth the $0.50 or less per bottle that you pay if you buy through Amazon Discounts , I don’t know what is. In this world, you generally get what you pay for. With this water, you get safety and a feeling of cleanliness from sharp tasting water. You know that your bottle won’t have additional residue from a sink (like iron chips or other unknown problems). The argument using tap water facts that tap water has the “added benefit” of including fluoride is questionable at best. Shouldn’t fluoride come from toothpaste, not from water?
Buying bottled water in third world countries is even more important. There are countries where tap water is literally undrinkable due to the chemicals that infest the water system. In a country such as China, the water is extremely hard due to all the minerals that filter into the water. This is why hot drinks are so popular in China — the boiling of the water kills the germs (but not necessarily the minerals). Any one living in China has the option of either boiling water or buying bottles of water. Is boiling water really worth your time?
Even in the United States, you have the option of buying a water purifier for the tap that, again, requires time and effort and money. If you want to take the water with you, you will need some form of container. These containers, if used frequently also run the risk of containing germs themselves, so you will constantly need to wash your containers. These are the hidden costs of tap water.

Tap water purists tend to focus on one primary reason for believing that tap water is better than bottled water — price. Tap water can be found for essentially no price by simply turning on your faucet. Also, there have been numerous scientific studies indicating that bottled water is any safer than tap water. Not only this, did you know that Evian brand water is simply purified water from Corpis Christi, Texas? Really, are you paying for the brand and the bottle or are you paying for better water? Those on the tap water side point to tap water facts and bottle water facts to point out that you are spending your money on water bottle labels and nothing more.
Bottled Water vs Tap Water Conclusion?
While the answer of “it depends” is a poor answer to give, it is quite fitting for this competition. Although tap water facts point to bottled water not being any more clean as tap water, you need to take every bottled water statistic with a grain of salt. These water statistics are built to give shocking answers and, even if bottled water is purified water from Texas, I would still prefer to drink water backed by a label such as Evian than random water from my kitchen faucet, but for the price of water bottles, my choice for bottled water vs tap water is both. Unless you can find bottled water on sale at up to 50% off like I was able to here , you should limit your bottled water drinking by getting as much tap water as is convenient. On the other hand, it’s always nice to have a bottle to take to work that you know is free of germs. Just buy cheap and smart while looking for the best discounts!
